Dell Technologies Match Play will be off the PGA Tour from the 2024 calendar year. The tournament is scheduled from March 22 to March 26 and will probably be the last season of the event.
The executive director and vice president of PGA Tour championship management, Jordan Uppleger, recently announced the same in his interview with the media.
He said:
"We’re formally announcing today that the 2023 World Golf Championship Dell Technologies Match Play will be the final playing of the event here at Austin Country Club, and not be included on the 2024 calendar or moving forward.”
Uppleger added:
"I was told you had to have three main components to have a successful event, you had to have an active title sponsor, an engaging country club and a supporting community and client base. And there is no doubt that this event has exceeded all of those expectations as we’ve been here since 2016.”
The tournament is officially out of the PGA Tour and will reportedly be filled by the Cadence Bank Houston Open in 2024.
"There’s no doubt that our team would be looking at that" - Jordan Uppleger talks about the future of the championship
Jordan Uppleger looked optimistic while talking about Dell Technologies Match Play in his interview on Monday, March 6. He hoped that they would be back in Austin if things turned out in their favor in the future. He said:
"I think you’ve seen this throughout our history. Look at the markets we’ve been in, and we’ve had to exit markets for certain reasons. And obviously, we would look at Austin, Texas, in the future. It’s not on the ’24 calendar, but clearly look at the success that we’ve had here. There’s no doubt that our team would be looking at that.”
Match Play was established in 1999. It is held every year in Austin, Texas, at the Austin Country Club. The tournament has a field of 64 players from the World Official Golf Rankings.
Tiger Woods holds the record for winning the tournament the most number of times. He won it thrice, followed by Jason Day and Geoff Ogilvy, who won it twice. Last year, Scottie Scheffler registered a victory over Kevin Kisner in the Dell Technologies Match Play.
Interestingly, the PGA Tour has confirmed eight designated events for the 2024 season. The new events will be no-cut and have a limited field. The designated events will also have a larger prize pool, which is designed specifically for the top-ranked players. According to reports, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will also be among the events.
