Why does Matt McCarty have ‘butter fingers’ stamped wedges?

Matt McCarty has stamped "butter fingers" on his wedges after receiving a penalty earlier this year on the Korn Ferry Tour event. The American recently won his maiden PGA Tour event at the 2024 Black Desert Championship. He had a fabulous game to win a Tour event in just his third start on the circuit.

McCarty has played mostly with Ping golf clubs and interestingly, his 50-degree wedge has "butter fingers" stamped on its face. The 26-year-old golfer revealed the reason for it, ahead of the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier this month.

Speaking about the unique stamp, he stated that while competing in a Korn Ferry Tour event in Sarasota, he "got a shot penalty," so his caddie, Devrath Das, suggested he put "butter fingers" on the wedges for fun. Surprisingly, it turned out to be good fortune for the golfer, as he revealed that he "hasn't dropped it since" and called it "good mojo."

Speaking of his stamped wedges, McCarty said, via PGA Tour:

“I got ‘Butter Fingers’ stamped on my 50-degree. I dropped my club on the ball, got a shot penalty in a Korn Ferry event in Sarasota this summer, so my caddie [Devrath Das] thought it’d be funny to put ‘Butter Fingers’ on it, so that’s where we’re at…we haven’t dropped it since, I guess that’s good mojo.”

Notably, Matt McCarty uses Ping Glide Forged Pro model wedges of 50, 55, and 60 degrees. He has specially stamped his 50-degree wedge.

McCarty recently earned his PGA Tour card by topping the season-ending standings of the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour. He made his debut as a full-time member of the Tour at the Sanderson Farms Championship, and in just his second event on the circuit as a member of the Tour, he won a tournament.
