Sahith Theegala, playing at the ongoing 3M Open, made a surprising change to his bag. He opted to play with a Ping PLD Tyne S at the ongoing PGA Tour event, replacing his old Ping Karsten TR 1966 Anser 2 prototype.
Theegala reflected on the change in the putter following the first round of the 3M Open Championship at the TPC Twin Cities. He said that he wanted to "see if something different would be interesting" and thus decided to play with a new putter. Interestingly, this turned in his favor as he confessed that it "felt good" to play with the new putter.
Speaking of the changes he made in his game, Theegala said (via PGA Tour):
“Yeah, probably used the same one for eight or nine years pretty much. I've had stints where I went away from it, but it was just kind of on the bench. It's the same deal this week, it's just on the bench.”
“I just wanted to see if something different would be interesting. This putter's so different than my normal putter. I got enough practice strokes with it, not a ton, but yeah, it felt good," he added.
Sahith Theegala shot a bogey-free round to kickstart the 2024 3M Open. He made five birdies in the first round, including three on the front nine and two on the back nine.
He scored 5-under-66 to settle in a tie for sixth place with Kevin Streelman, Gary Woodland, Hayden Springer, Michael Thorbjornsen, Stewart Cink, Taylor Pendrith, and Kurt Kitayama. Jacob Bridgeman put forward a strong performance this week, carding a round of 8-under 63 to top the leaderboard.
