Will Zalatoris has struggled with injuries since becoming a professional golfer, and they haven't left him alone in 2025. Zalatoris was in the field for the Farmers Insurance Open this weekend after making two starts in 2025. Unfortunately, he's had to withdraw and was replaced with Ryan Moore.
Zalatoris had been in top form so far in 2025 as he looked to enjoy a healthy season, unlike last year. He placed T26 at The Sentry and T12 at The American Express. He's also had four top-30 finishes in his past five starts overall and gained strokes putting in all four events.
The golfer's withdrawal comes at a bad time. He has played very well historically at Torrey Pines. He's placed T13, P2 and T7 in three of his last four Farmers Insurance Open starts. He was primed for a big weekend, but he's not in the field anymore.
Zalatoris has had multiple surgeries and has had to take weeks off from the PGA Tour at several different points during his career. He won Rookie of the Year in 2020-2021, but he's struggled to play full seasons since then.
Will Zalatoris addresses offseason weight gain
Will Zalatoris came into the new year after adding 19 pounds. Athletes often gain weight in the offseason due to a less regimented diet and less exercise, but this was an intentional gain by Zalatoris.
The golfer wanted to get bigger and stronger so that he had the stamina to play several weeks in a row without losing a step. He said via Golf.com:
“If you look at the weeks that I had throughout the year, my best weeks were always the first of a stretch, and I always loved playing one, two, three weeks and building in a rhythm."
He said he's often won after playing three or four weeks in a row, but that has been a struggle lately:
“By the third or fourth week I was down a couple miles an hour in swing speed, I didn’t really feel very good, I wasn’t driving it great, and it’s just hard to play out here like that. I knew I needed to get stronger. It wasn’t so much about the speed;I know that the speed will come. I needed the stability to make sure that I was able to do what I’m doing.”
He initially joked that it was because he was tired of people talking about his slim waist, but it was ultimately about getting into better shape for the 2025 season. It was largely to allow Will Zalatoris to continue playing at a high level without risking injury, which is a problem that may not have gone away.
