The Showdown, which will take place on December 17 in Las Vegas, will go down in history as the first event to pit a PGA Tour team against a LIV Golf team. But that will not be its only historical achievement.
The event, which will pit Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, will also be the first in professional golf history to have its purse denominated in critocurrency. A report from Front Office Sports claims that the purse will be $10 million and will be delivered in a cryptocurrency called CRO.
This cryptocurrency is the native token of the Cronos blockchain created by Crypto.com, which is the new title sponsor of The Showdown, according to the report.
Crypto.com CMO Steve Kalifowitz told Front Office Sports that participants in The Showdown will need to have an account on the platform to collect the prize. However, players will be free to sell or trade their winnings at any time.
Currently, CRO is ranked 28th among the top cryptocurrencies on the market. On Thursday, November 28, one unit of CRO was worth $0.1751.
According to the report, the winnings will be distributed to both the winning and losing teams. However, the amounts in which this distribution will be made have not yet been made public.
Some details about The Showdown
The event now called The Showdown was created by the players themselves. Neither the PGA Tour nor LIV Golf had any involvement in the organization, so details of the event will be reported as they become available.
The Showdown will take place on December 17 at Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas and will be televised on TNT Sports. Although full details of the format have not yet been released, it has been said that it will be played over 18 holes and that a team variant such as foursomes or fourball will be used.
Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka are all competing in The Showdown. It is expected to become an annual event, played at an international destination every other year.
In fact, Front Office Sports reported last October that Shadow Creek Golf Club had signed a six-year agreement to host the event. The report also stated that plans are underway to take the event to the Middle East for the second edition, while Europe is also in the future plans.
Since the inception of LIV Golf in 2022, LIV and PGA Tour players have had limited opportunities to compete against each other. These meetings have been limited almost exclusively to the major championships and always on an individual basis.
This will be the first time that players from both circuits will face each other, although they will not officially represent either side.
