Xander Schauffele emerged victorious at the 2024 Open Championship last week. The 30-year-old not only walked away with a massive $3.1 million cheque, but he also received 750 FedEx Cup points along with the title of 'Champion Golfer of the Year'.
The final round of the 2024 Open Championship saw NBC and Peacock draw in a combined 3.39 million viewers. As Schauffele lifted the prestigious Claret Jug trophy for the first time in his career, 258,174 spectators were present on the Royal Troon's grounds. However, the viewership numbers for this year were four percent lower than Brian Harman's win in 2023.
According to Sports Business Journal's Josh Carpenter, the numbers marked a new low in a decade of viewership at the Open Championship. Despite finishing the event on a Sunday, the new low stooped below 2015's record on ESPN which saw Zach Johnson win on a Monday.
The 2024 Open Championship was broadcast in a whopping 199 countries worldwide. Golf enthusiasts can't help but speculate about the reasons behind the poor viewership despite having a large broadcast.
