Andre Metzger, a 41-year-old native of Scottsdale who qualified for the WM Phoenix Open, is playing in only his second TOUR start.
The PGA Tour's official Twitter account shared a video just after the game where Metzger was asked about how he was feeling and he replied:
"This is pretty good. You can't match this."
Andre Metzger at the WM Pheonix Open 2023
The WM Phoenix Open is going on right now, and it will end on February 12. It is one of the most significant events of the year with a star-studded lineup.
37 of the top 50 players in the world, including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Collin Morikawa, are competing in the tournament. This year, Scheffler is returning to defend his championship.
To compete at TPC Scottsdale for the coveted trophy, 41-year-old Andre Metzger of Scottsdale, Brett White of Houston, and Dalton Ward of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, had to advance from the WM Phoenix Open qualification.
At Pine Course, Andre Metzger had the best round of the day. With birdies at the 14th, 16th, and 17th holes, he posted a 65 without any bogeys. White and Ward tied for second place with scores of 66. White had eight birdies, while Ward made six in the round without a bogey.
Fans react to Metzeger's incredible game
Sports fans are just too lovable. Their comments on the upcoming and performing players are just incredible. Just after the PGA Tour shared Andre Metzger's video, golf fans could not hold themselves back from commenting.
One of the guys wrote:
"Just look at him smile"
Another fan felt Metzeger's story was 'cool':
"This is such a cool story"
One fan wrote:
"wow that's so nice"
If there is love, there is also criticism. Just like this commenter who wrote:
"It’s been obvious for years that golf needs more holes like this fan friendly, raucous, boozy party hole. How about one tournament every year the fans are allowed to yell, cheer, and even boo the players as they swing? You know, like EVERY other sport?"
Sarcasm is the love language of fans, just like this guy who wrote:
"No thanks. They threw his ball back."
WM Pheonix Open 2023
The 2023 WM Phoenix Open, the first full-field designated tournament of the season, has taken center stage in the PGA Tour's playing schedule. The Greenest Show on Grass will undoubtedly feature some of the loudest spectators golfers have heard all season since 22 of the top 25 players in the Official World Golf Rankings will be competing.
For the first time in 2023, all of the top Tour players are competing for a prize pool of $20 million, with $3.6 million going to the victor.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who is making his first Tour start of the year after winning in Dubai last week, and World No. 3 Jon Rahm, both of whom have two Tour victories in 2023, are the betting favorites. Behind them comes World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, who earned his maiden victory at the Phoenix Open last year before rocketing to the top spot.
