Lexi Thompson and Team USA outlasted Team Europe in the 2024 Solheim Cup, allowing the trophy to return to their care after several years. Since Thompson is poised to retire after play ends this season, it was her final chance to play for the American side.

Thompson and her teammates ensured that she went out on top. After the tournament ended, Thompson offered up a statement:

"There's pressure every time we tee it up. It might be a little bit more representing our country, but it's learning to embrace it. You're not alone out there. You have your teammates by your side."

She continued:

"There was something about this team that was different. The atmosphere, the energy. There was nothing like it. We all came together and played some amazing golf. It was great to be a part of it."

Since Thompson won't be playing competitively, she will not have the chance to qualify or be selected when the tournament resumes in two years. However, she is only 29 and could eventually return to pro golf if she chooses, though she is firm in her decision right now.

Things began to look like the 2023 Solheim Cup briefly. That year, the US had a lead that they watched slip away before Europe tied it to end play. The Europeans began mounting a comeback in 2024 as well before a Lilia Vu birdie sealed the win.

The final score was the United States 15.5 and Europe 12.5. It is the biggest margin in the team competition since the Americans won by five points in 2017 in Iowa. The USA now has an overall record of 11-7-1.

Lexi Thompson missed potential winning putt

It was nearly a storybook finish for Lexi Thompson. As she rides off into the sunset, the American golfer nearly hit what would have been the winning putt to earn the USA a win for the first time in nearly a decade and cap off her illustrious career.

She narrowly missed a 12-foot birdie putt, which allowed Celine Boutier to cap her three-stroke comeback and earn a point for the Europeans. That was while everything was trending towards another European comeback.

Boutier sank a five-foot putt to earn that point and keep the tournament going, but the Europeans eventually ran out of steam thanks to Lilia Vu. Thompson fought back tears after her match but the Americans secured their victory anyway.

In her final outing as a member of Team USA, Lexi Thompson went 1-3-0. Overall, the Americans were led by Megan Khang, who went 3-0-0 in play. Allisen Corpuz was also undefeated with one tie on her record. Rose Zhang went 4-0-0 as well.
