Shane Lowry split with his caddie Brian 'Bo' Martin in January. The duo parted ways after winning several accolades, including the 2019 Open Championship. Having worked together since 2018, the split made headlines.
After months of their split, Lowry has now come out to reveal the reason for the same. Stating that he “got a lot of stick” after he parted ways with Martin, the Irishman said that he simply needed something fresh after a series of disappointing outcomes.
Opening up about the caddie change, Lowry also pointed out that he isn’t “exactly a caddie firer” and was happy with Bo for four-and-a-half years. The world No.23 player hinted that he needed some fresh energy moving forward.
Speaking on Sunday after finishing tied for 35th in the Players Championship, Shane Lowry said:
“I've had two caddies my whole career, and I've been on tour 14 years. I'm not exactly a caddie firer or anything. This is my third caddie.”
It is pertinent to note that Lowry hired veteran caddie Darren Reynolds in February for the rest of the season. The duo were off to a bad start with Lowry missing the cut at the WM Phoenix Open.
However, they seemed to have gelled together as the golfer went on to make four cuts. The duo also celebrated a T5 finish at the Honda Classic. Speaking about his new caddie, Lowry said:
“I've known Darren for years. He had just started with Alex Levy on the European Tour. That's almost why I didn't want to ask him, because I knew he just got a new job and I didn't want to take him away and then it not work out for us. But, frankly, he was one of the few options I had, and we just had a chat. He caddied for me during COVID for a few weeks when Bo couldn't, and yeah, it's been going pretty good.”
The Irishman admitted that it was a tough period after firing Bo. He added:
“That week in Phoenix was a bit weird for me, and I felt a bit different. But thankfully we went to L.A. and we had a decent result, and then we went and contended at the Honda. Bay Hill didn't go to as planned, but Bay Hill is not a place I typically go. And then but for the first round here, we've had a decent week this week. So, it's gone well so far.”
Shane Lowry split with caddie Brian 'Bo' Martin after Dubai outing
For the unversed, Shane Lowry had a disappointing DP World Tour start in the Middle East. The golfer dropped six shots in the final five holes to settle for a T28 finish in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and missed the cut in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Following this, the golfer was clearly looking for some major changes. Shane Lowry said:
“At the time it kind of came out of nowhere. We started in the Middle East, and I had a bad couple of weeks, and we had a chat and things weren't going … When I sit down and look at it, things that weren't going as well as I probably thought, it got to me a little bit and I just needed something fresh. When it happened, I had no one in mind, no one lined up. So I didn't know what to do.”
It is pertinent to note that Shane Lowry changing his caddie early on in the year is being perceived as a long-term plan. With the Masters closing in, the Irishman might be fancying a chance with experienced Reynolds by his side.
