Cantlay was born into the family of Steve and Colleen Cantlay, and by the age of three, he began playing golf. He has two brothers, Nick and Jack Cantlay, and a sister, Caroline. He went to Servite High School, where, as a senior, he took home the California State High School Championship. Then he went to the University of California, Los Angeles.
Cantlay set a course record with a 60-stroke round in June at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, making it the lowest round in PGA Tour history by an amateur. He tied for 20th place at the AT&T National the following week, where he emerged as the low amateur.
At the San Gabriel Country Club the next week, Cantlay emerged as the winner of the Southern California Amateur. In July of 2011, he participated in the 2011 RBC Canadian Open as a low amateur and tied for ninth place.
Given his excellent amateur career, Cantlay turned professional in 2012, two years before completing his college graduation, and won his first professional title at the 2013 Colombia Championship.
