It took over a decade for Phil Mickelson to win his first Major tournament after he started his professional career in 1992. However, the American golfer won his maiden Major at the Masters in 2004 with a one-shot win.

Following the amazing victory, Mickelson shared his excitement during the press conference. He hilariously called on the members of Augusta to get "used to" him after his first Masters win. Mickelson said, via Augusta.com:

"This and this are not going anywhere, baby. I'd like to say to members of Augusta National: Please get used to me, because I'm going to be back every year."

Notably, Mickelson took the lead at the Masters 2004 after the third round in a tie with Chris DiMarco. However, in the final round, there was a rough competition between Mickelson and Ernie Els.

The American golfer did not get a good start in the fourth round of the 2004 Masters as he shot three bogeys and only a birdie on the front nine. However, the game changed after the seventh hole, and he made five birdies on the back nine. Speaking of his performance at the Masters 2004, Phil Mickelson said, via Augusta.com:

"I didn't get off to the best start, but when I started to get to Nos. 7 and 8, those holes I could take off. I didn't birdie them, but things started to change. I looked at holes as birdie opportunities, and it ultimately clicked on No. 12."

Meanwhile, Els had a good start and gained momentum in the game with an eagle on the eighth hole of the final round and added another eagle on the 12th. However, after that, the South African player could only make a single birdie, while Mickelson was pretty impressive on the concluding holes of the Major. Finally, it was the American golfer who won the event.

Mickelson also spoke about his performance on the final holes of the Masters 2004, saying:

"I heard the roar, and I figured he'd just made eagle. I took a pretty aggressive line at that pin. I knew I was three back when I was facing that putt. If I could make that putt on No. 12, all I'd have to do was birdie No. 13, and I would be within a shot with five to go. And so, when that putt on No. 12 went in, that's when I started to feel like I could make this happen."

Phil Mickelson played the four rounds of 72, 69, 69, and 69 to win his first Major at the 2004 Masters.

How many Majors did Phil Mickelson win in his career?

It took him a long time to win his first Major, but thereafter, Phil Mickelson added a couple of Major titles to his cap in the next few years. He won the PGA Championship in 2005, and then in 2006, he again won the Masters.

Mickelson has won six Majors in his career, with his final coming in 2021 at the PGA Championship. He became the oldest golfer to win a Major championship after the 2021 PGA Championship winning it at the age of 50 years, 11 months, and 7 days.

Phil Mickelson has won three Masters (2004, 2006, and 2010), two PGA Championships (2005 and 2021), and the Open Championship in 2013. However, he had a tough time at the U.S. Open. He came close to winning the U.S. Open six times in his career but ultimately settled in second place.
