The PNC Championship is one of the PGA Tour's most anticipated event of the year as fans look forward to seeing their favorite professional golfers tee it up with their family members. Prior to the opening round of this year's event, reports emerged regarding the tournaments high-profile sponsor - PNC Bank - and their financial relationship.
According to a report from Sports Business Journal's Josh Carpenter, the bank's deal with the event was set to expire in 2025. However, they have extended their title sponsorship of the PNC Championship through 2032.
The bank first sponsored the event in 2012 and partned with them because of golf legend Arnold Palmer. The Pittsburg native shared the same hometown with the headquarters of the bank. 2008 to 2010 did not see the PNC Championship take place due to a financial crisis.
Now owned by NBC Sports and IMG, the former's president of partnerships Jon Miller vividly remembers Palmer's fight to keep the tournament going. In an exclusive interview with the Sports Business Journal, he said:
"In 2011 we were at Bay Hill in the Lexington Cottage [for the Arnold Palmer Invitational] and Jim Rohr, the chairman of PNC, was there with Arnold and myself and others, and Arnold began asking what was going on with the sponsorship. And he says ‘You have to get this back on.’ He looks over at Jim Rohr and says ‘I think PNC should sponsor the father-son.’ He [Rohr] looked up and said ‘What?’ And Arnold said ‘PNC will become the sponsor. Arnold was relentless in getting it back up. He would say after the majors this is the most important event in golf.”
The PNC Championship has grown over the years due to appearances from Tiger Woods and his son Charlie. Known as the "father-son" tournament, LPGA superstar Annika Sorenstam makes an appearance every year with her son will at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.
