Tommy Fleetwood will be making his second appearance at the Summer Olympic games this week in Paris. The 33-year-old will take on the Le Golf National course, which is located on the outskirts of Paris, from August 1 to 4.
Following a tie for 16th place finish at Tokyo in 2020, the DP World Tour star is eager to earn Great Britan their second gold medal in golf. Fleetwood is sporting the Great Britan colors wth pride as he preps to dominate the field. Here's what Fleetwood had to say to Sky Sports Golf about making his second appearance at the Olympics:
" It's pretty much the biggest sporting occasion in the world. I've said it a few times now, and for us and our generation as golfers, we never had the option to dream of being at the Olympics or playing in the Olympics, or winning a gold medal. So for me an 8 year old, 10 year old, 12 year old, I never dreamt that I could be a part of the Olympics. "
Golf first debuted as a sport at the Olympics in 1900 and 1904 but was not recognised to be an official part of the prestigious Games. However, the International Olympic Committee made the decision to recognize golf as an Olympic sport in 2016.
Tommy Fleetwood believes that the decision will benefit the game for generations to come. Here's what he had to say to Sky Sports Golf regarding the honor that comes with representing his country at the highest level:
" You're seeing it now how special it is. I'm pretty sure everybody here would love to look back on their career with a gold medal or any kind of medal on their mantle piece. That's something very very very special. From now on, I think you're going to see it grow. And its going to continue to mean a lot really. Being able to have done this twice now, one should be a part of one, you know its going to end eventually but there's no way you ever want to miss out on one. "
