Scottie Scheffler seeks to earn USA yet another gold medal as he makes his debut at the Olympic games this week. The world number one is set to take on the Le Golf National course, which is located on the outskirts of Paris, France, from Aug. 1 to 4.
The 2024 Augusta Masters champion arrived in Paris a few days earlier to watch the world's best athletes take on various sports. In a pre-tournament press conference, Scheffler revealed that he had the privilege of attending the men's table tennis event.
The 12-time PGA Tour winner is no stranger to the sport as he was spotted enjoying several games of table tennis at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Marco Simone. After considering himself "elite" in the sport, here's what Scheffler had to say about the experience:
" I think at one time I would have considered the table tennis that we played elite. I'm pretty sure it's far from it [now]. ”
During the press conference, it was pointed out that the first gold medal for golf was won by Charles Sands in 1900, who also represented Team USA in tennis as well. Coincidentally, Scheffler and his caddie, Ted Scott, were spotted hitting some serves on the Olympics tennis court. In reaction to this fact, Scheffler flirted around with the idea of being a dual sport Olympian. He said:
" Could I be a multi-sport athlete in the Olympics? I don't think so. But sometimes I have irrational self-confidence, and maybe if I really put my mind to it. But I don't think you'll be seeing me out playing tennis in the Olympics any time soon, the table version or the regular version. "
Before prepping for the Olympics, the PGA Tour star and his wife and son had toured Paris. The Schefflers paid a visit to the Louvre and enjoyed French delicacies. His mini-vacation is sure to have given him some much-needed rest to help him dominate the field this week as he seeks to finish on top of the podium on his first Olympics appearance.
