Javier Ballesteros, the son of Spanish golfing legend Seve (pictured in 2007) who died last year, says he wants to become a professional golfer.

“I like golf a great deal, I think each day I like it a little bit more,” the 22-year-old law student said in an interview published on Thursday in daily newspaper 20 Minutos.

“I am eager to finish my law studies to dedicate myself only to golf, which is not at all easy.”

Earlier this month Ballesteros won the Madrid Open amateur title and he dedicated his victory to his father who died aged 54 in May 2011 after a long battle with cancer.

He finished the three-round tournament on six-under par for a four-stroke win over Manuel Ruiz.

Asked if his playing style was similar to that of his father, Ballesteros told 20 Minutos: “I don’t know. Maybe I inherited his ability for the short game. He taught me this part of the game very well.”

Seve Ballesteros won five majors in his career and played in eight Ryder Cups, captaining Europe to victory in 1997.
