"Trying to get people excited about something"- Rory McIlroy on the match between PGA Tour and LIV golfers
McIlroy opened up about the exciting tournament featuring PGA Tour and LIV golfers during his interview at the Irish Open. Last month, the Northern Irish golfer competed at his home open, finishing in second place.
At the event, he also spoke about the exhibition golf series event, The Match, whose upcoming edition is officially titled The Showdown. He said (via Mirror):
"It's a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward. I've been saying this for a long time. I think golf and golf fans get to see us together more than four times a year.
“I think that's what we've tried to do. It's in the middle of December. There's not a lot going on in the game of golf. So trying to get people excited about something before the season starts again. I think we all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future," he added.
Notably, McIlroy, DeChambeau, and Koepka have played in The Match in previous editions. However, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be making his debut this year.
Recently, McIlroy and Koepka competed together at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which concluded on October 6. The Irish players finished tied for 25th place, while the American golfer finished in T10.
