World number one Scottie Scheffler is tied for fourth place after 2 rounds of the 2024 Open Championship with a 2-under-par score. The American is looking for a third Major championship title. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry takes the solo lead with a score of 7-under-par 135.
With six wins under his belt this year, Scheffler has been known to rise to the occasion under pressure. Perhaps that's why despite being five strokes ahead of him before the penultimate round, Lowry feels that the American wouldn't be worried about any of the golfers around him on the leaderboard. During his post-round press conference at the Royal Troon Golf Club, Lowry was asked if his chasers should be worried about his strong performance at the links golf course. He said,
" Honestly, I'm not sure Scottie Scheffler is too worried about anyone with the form he's in. He's obviously on the leaderboard, and he's one person that people are going to be talking about. There's some other guys there as well. I see Justin Rose going well, and this guy Daniel Brown, I've never played with him, but obviously he had a great day yesterday and looks to be going all right today. Yeah, I don't know, like I think if I give myself a chance on Sunday, I know I can do it. That's as good a position to be in as any. "
Lowry scored a fine two-under-par 69 round on Friday to shoot up the leaderboard. The three-time PGA Tour winner demonstrated great skill and intelligent shot-making on the course. Sitting two shots clear of second-placed Daniel Brown and Justin Rose, Lowry is in a good position to earn a second Major championship title of his career. The Irishman said:
" I feel like I really finished the round well. I'm pretty happy with the day. To be leading this tournament after two days, it's why you come here, it's why we're here. ... The job tomorrow as well is to try to put myself in a position to win this tournament on Sunday, and that's what I'll try and do."
