The highly anticipated golf docu-series 'Full Swing' premiered on Saturday night during the Super Bowl celebration at Topgolf Scottsdale. The premiere was star-studded with personalities from various fields.
Some of the most famous names included sports personalities like Serena Williams, Shaquille O’Neal, DJ Khaled, Canelo Álvarez, and actor Brian Cox. They all walked the green carpet at Topgolf.
US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick of England and Sahith Theegala, who is in his second season on the PGA TOUR, also came to the premiere. Both players feature in the 'Full Swing'. The eight-episode docu-series will be available on Netflix from February 15.
The first episode of 'Full Swing', titled 'Frenemies', was presented by Netflix's Chad Mumm and Box To Box Films' Warren Smith.
Smith's company has made a successful docu-series on F1, 'Drive to Survive', for Netflix in the past. The first episode focuses on the dynamics between long-time friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, and also features Justin's father, Mike Thomas.
The episode features various aspects of the duo like driving, flying, working out, and triumphs like Spieth's RBC Heritage victory and Thomas' win at the PGA Championship. Thomas' success came from seven shots behind at Southern Hills, which was covered well in the docu-series. The episode also has snippets of Spieth and Thomas as kids.
Joel Dahmen and Matt Fitzpatrick were also present at the premiere along with Dahmen's caddie Geno Bonnalie, who is also his childhood friend. All three of them feature in the two episodes. The fourth episode titled 'Imposter Syndrome' reflects upon the relationship between Bonalie and Dahmen.
The following episode narrates the story of Fitzpatrick's rise that resulted in his thrilling US Open victory last year.
Instructor Sean Foley and CBS Golf personality Amanda Renner can be seen throughout this docu-series. Renner also briefly interviewed Fitzpatrick, Joel Dahmen, and Geno Bonnalie.
"I felt like they did a lot of filming" - Tony Finau on 'Full Swing' crew
It's not just the golf course and events that have been covered, but a lot of parts outside the green, including Thomas visiting CVS for relief from his allergies. The docu-series also explores luxuries like jets and million-dollar homes.
Tony Finau said that the crew was following them everywhere, including at their homes during the off weeks.
"I felt like they did a lot of filming," Finau was quoted by PGA Tour. "I knew when I said yes that it was a possibility. I told my wife. She was all-in; she didn’t mind it. It got to a point where it felt like they were just a fly on the wall."
The series also covers the behind-the-scenes of the four majors, the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the US Open, and the Open Championship.
In addition to the aforementioned players, names like Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Joaquin Niemann, Mito Pereira, and Rory McIlroy are also featured in the docu-series.
