Jay Green, who worked as a caddie for Grayson Murray till his death, will return to the job shortly. Green will hold Jason Gore's bag when he makes his PGA Tour Champions debut beginning this Friday, June 7.
Jay Green and Jason Gore met two days ago during the PGA Tour's memorial for Grayson Murray at Muirfield Village Golf Club, home of the Memorial Tournament. Gore approached Green out of the blue and asked if he wanted to caddie for him on the Champions Tour for the weekend.
"He’s like, ‘For who?’ ‘For me, dude! I just got a sponsor exemption!’", Gore told to the PGA Tour news service. "Getting back to normalcy will be good for him. I’ll hit a bad shot and it’s just golf, man."
He added:
"I just felt like it was the right thing to do; it felt right to have Jay here. We’ll both be nervous, for me just because it’s been a long time, and he’s just a young kid who had something awful happen. It’ll be good for both of us."
Green responded by accepting the proposal. It's something Grayson Murray would have wanted for him, he said:
"I think that’s what Grayson [Murray] would want, what his family would want. I don’t know Jason [Gore]’s game. I know he’s long. He and I have talked about our motto, which is zero expectations."
Jason Gore is remembered for his record seven career victories on the Korn Ferry Tour. He also has one victory on the PGA Tour. He has been away from competitive golf for several years, but is making his PGA Tour Champions debut this weekend, playing in the American Family Insurance Championship.
Grayson Murray died last May 25, after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge of the PGA Tour. It was later learned that the cause of death was suicide. Murray had made public his struggle with alcohol addiction and depression.
Who is Grayson Murray's caddie?
Jay Green was born and raised in Georgia, playing several sports during his childhood and youth, including golf. He decided to commit to the latter sport and played for four seasons in the U.S. collegiate system for Tiffin University (NCAA Division II).
Green planned to continue his studies at the Dental School, but his life took another path. He began his career as a caddie in 2019 and worked with several players until he took over Murray's bag at the end of 2023.
Green was a front row witness to Murray's second PGA Tour victory (Sony Open in Hawaii), as well as his journey through the 2024 season. With Green by his side, Murray played in the Masters Tournament for the first time and earned two Top 10s in 13 tournaments (including his victory).
