The Chevron Championship is one of the five majors in women's golf, but it has been known by different names in the past for sponsorship reasons. Originally began in 1972, the event got promoted to major status in 1983 and usually takes place first in the season.
From its founding until 2022, it took place at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, but was changed in 2023 to the Club at Carlton Woods' Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in the Woodlands, Texas.
Established by singer and actress Dinah Shore and David Foster, chairman of Colgate-Palmolive, the event always added "Dinah Shore" to its name until 2000. After a new sponsorship deal with Chevron Corporation was reached in 2023, the event moved to the Greater Houston area.
