The PGA Tour announced in September 2023 that the CJ Group will henceforth be the sponsor of the Byron Nelson event held in Dallas. The renaming of the event to "The CJ CUP Byron Nelson" was initially revealed at the tour's 2024 schedule release. Since 2015, AT&T has sponsored Nelson.

However, due to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am's designation as a signature event for the 2024 season and its corresponding higher purse, AT&T was rerouting its expenses to its other PGA Tour event.

Founded in 1944, the Nelson was once known as the Dallas Open. It was renamed in 1968 to honor Byron Nelson, and Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Sam Snead, and Jack Nicklaus are among its past champions. The venue, TPC Craig Ranch, will still host the competition since it moved there in 2021.

The event was won by Jason Day in 2010 and he was the victor again in 2023, defeating Austin Eckroat and Kim Si-woo by a single stroke for 261, under 23; the former finished tied for second place. The 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson was won by Taylor Pendrith with a score of 261, under 23, defeating Ben Kohles by one stroke.
