The PGA Tour declared in September 2023 that the Byron Nelson event, which takes place in Dallas, will henceforth be sponsored by the CJ Group; earlier, AT&T had sponsored it since 2015. Thus, the tournament was originally renamed "The CJ CUP Byron Nelson" at the time of the tour's 2024 schedule release.
It happened because AT&T was redirecting its spending to its other PGA Tour event. After all, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am was named a signature event for the 2024 season and had a greater purse.
Originally called the Dallas Open, the Nelson was established in 1944. It was renamed in 1968 in Byron Nelson's honor. Former winners include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Sam Snead, and Jack Nicklaus. The competition will remain held at the TPC Craig Ranch venue.
The 2024 CJ CUP Byron Nelson was scheduled to stretch from April 29 to May 5 and was won by Taylor Pendrith over Ben Kohles for a score of 261, under 23. In 2023, Jason Day repeated as the winner of the event, defeating Austin Eckroat and Kim Si-woo, who were tied for second, by a single stroke. Day had previously won the title in 2010.
