One of the PGA Tour's eight signature and five invitational events, the Memorial Tournament was originally started by Jack Nicklaus, who also developed the course, 48 years ago at Dublin, Ohio's Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Every year, the Memorial Tournament celebrates a living or deceased person who has significantly influenced the game of golf. Nicklaus developed this notion to help preserve the achievements of history's finest golfers.
The honoree is chosen by the Captains Club, an independent group of statesmen who advise on player invitations and event management in general but are not part of the tournament organization.
The 2024 Memorial Tournament is scheduled for June 3–6, with honorees Juli Inkster—a former professional who has 45 wins, including seven majors—and Tom Weiskopf—a former professional who has 28 wins and has designed multiple golf courses.

The Memorial Tournament 2024 Course Details
The Memorial Tournament is held at the Niklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The name of the course is derived from the Scottish town of Muirfield, where in 1966 Niklaus achieved his first career grand slam, of three. A bronze sculpture of Nicklaus instructing a junior golfer was unveiled in 1999 and is located in the wide Muirfield Drive median.
MVGC has also hosted other international team events and national championships, including the 2013 Presidents Cup, the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1987 Ryder Cup, the 1998 Solheim Cup, and the 1992 U.S. Amateur. Together with The Greenbrier in West Virginia, it is one of just two US golf courses that have hosted the Ryder and Solheim Cups.
In 2014, Golf Digest released its first list of the top 100 golf courses worldwide, and Muirfield Village came in first place in Ohio and 53rd overall. Also in 2018, Golf Digest placed Muirfield Village at number 14 in the United States.
MVGC closed after the 2020 Memorial Tournament and underwent major renovations; every green complex was altered, and bunkers were expanded and deepened. The holes that changed the most were the fifth and fifteenth, while the twelfth and fourteenth stayed the same. Nicklaus called out this makeover as "his final bite at the apple."
