Tiger’s niece, Cheyenne Woods, leads the way in Madrid.
The golfing world may be focused on her uncle at Muirfield but Cheyenne Woods was making her own mark at the Open de Espana on Thursday.
Woods, who is the niece of men’s world number one Tiger, fired nine birdies and just a single bogey on her way to an eight-under par 64 and a two-shot lead in Madrid.
The 22-year-old American is playing her first season on Tour and was delighted with her round, saying afterwards: “I started out birdie, birdie and that was a great way to start out. I had birdies here and there and my putting was great. I just played really steady. Everything clicked today so I felt great. Hopefully I can continue just part of that tomorrow.”
Home favourite Tonia Elosegui was two shots behind after firing a 66 with South African Lee-Anne Pace one shot further back.
Frenchwoman Celine Herbin was next on four-under followed by a large group of players who fired 69s.
