Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler are up against Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith for the Saturday fourball at the 2024 Presidents Cup. After a tie on the first hole and a delayed start due to fog, Morikawa and Scheffler made a decent start to the third day.
The limelight is naturally on the World No. 1 in this group, but his partner Morikawa overshadowed him and helped Team USA gain the lead after draining a long putt. All four golfers had a challenging third shot to make a birdie.
The 27-year-old American went in first as he had around 39 ft putt. Everyone, including the commentators, thought getting the ball as close to the hole as possible was the best option. However, Morikawa had other plans as he drained the putt for birdie and was charged up as the crowd roared behind him in support.
The International Team had to hole out their next shot to tie the hole, which, eventually, they couldn't. This helped Team USA take the lead on the second hole. However, they couldn't maintain the lead for long as the home team immediately made a comeback and won the third hole to tie the scores again.
Even though the Saturday Fourball session has just begun with plenty of holes remaining, Team USA is off to a difficult start. From the four games, the International Team is leading one while the rest are still tied.
Earlier, after a delayed start to day three due to fog, Team USA is looking to make a comeback as the International Team has equaled their points with five wins on Friday. Team USA won all five games on day one, while the International Team won all five on day two. Hence, the current overall scoreline is 5-5, making the Saturday Fourball results crucial.
Collin Morikawa's performance in the 2024 Presidents Cup so far
Collin Morikawa has played two games in the 2024 Presidents Cup so far. The two-time Major championship winner has won one while losing the other game. He was paired with his childhood buddy Sahith Theegala for both games.
The pair defeated Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee on day one by a tiny margin of 1 up. Sharing his thoughts after round one, Morikawa said (via ASAP Sports):
"We got the point. We grinded, and we worked our butt off, and we really came through on that back nine and started hitting some better shots. We started giving ourselves two birdie looks, and that's the most important thing in this format is giving yourself opportunities, both of us, and not playing 1 v. 2," Morikawa said.
However, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala lost their match by a margin of 5&4 on Friday against Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrick.
