Following a fairly consistent season on the PGA Tour this year, Rory McIlroy will now turn his attention to the DP World Tour. The Irishman will be teeing it up later this week at the 2024 Amgen Irish Open at the Royal County Down from September 12 to 15.
With the course located just an hour away from his hometown, McIlroy announced his enrollment in the tournament in early January this year. The Irish Open Pro-Am took place on Wednesday (September 11), and saw the PGA Tour sensation smashing a drive while his fans cheered him on and showered him with applause.
Here's a look at the scene at the Royal County Down Golf Club (via DP World Tour):
The Irish course serves as a walk down memory lane for the four-time Major championship winner. McIlroy served as one of the best players on Great Britain and Ireland's 2007 Walker Cup team and made a great appearance as a junior golfer.
Having won his maiden Irish Open title in 2016 at The K Club, the Olympian seeks to add another one to his record after missing the last three editions of the tournament. In an interview with the DP World Tour, McIlroy said he will be taking happy memories from the past years as he heads into this week.
As the home favorite, the TGL league co-founder, is excited to be surrounded by his Irish fans. He said (via DP World Tour):
"Royal County Down is a fantastic venue and I still have some great memories from the 2007 Walker Cup. The crowds are always so supportive of all the Irish golfers taking part and the atmosphere is unlike any other we have at a golf tournament. Time and time again the fans prove that they are some of the best in the world and I can’t wait to see them out in support of us again.”
