Rory McIlroy and Viktor Havlond are currently competing at the 2024 Scottish Open, scheduled from July 11 to 14 at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick. In the opening round, defending champion McIlroy was paired with his Ryder Cup teammate Hovland.

As the pair were preparing to shuttle across the course in a buggy, the vehicle ran into technical malfunctions. McIlroy and Hovland were seated in the back row of the golf cart while Hovland's caddie, Shay Knight, sat in the front next to the operator.

The operator attempted to start the vehicle but due to the malfunction, the buggy moved backward, drawing reactions from the spectators. When the cart finally resumed regular functioning, the crowd started cheering, with Hovland joining with an applause of his own. The operator celebrated by putting his fist up in the air and the Ryder Cup teammates shared a laugh.

Here's a video of the incident:

Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland 2024 Genesis Scottish Open Round 1 Recap

Defending champion McIlroy is tied for fourth place after the first round. The Northern Irishman shot an opening round score of five under par 65 to sit one stroke behind the leaders.

McIlroy's playing partner, Hovland, is tied for 17th place with a score of three under par 67. With the group starting the tournament off the Renaissance Club's back nine, Hovland started the day with two birdies in the first five holes.

With three birdies on the first nine, Hovland carded in two bogeys on the 15th and 17th to end the half with a one under par 34. The Norwegian then fought back with a bogey-free second nine. He went on to card in two more birdies on holes five and eight to end the day with a three under par score.

McIlroy had a mediocre start to the day. He got a birdie on the first hole of the day but carded a bogey on the next hole. The 35-year-old repeated the same pattern on holes 14 and 15.

McIlroy ended the first nine with a one under par score of 34. He then battled out the second nine by carding in a bogey-free second half like Hovland. He started the half with a birdie on the first hole and jumped up the leaderboard with an incredible eagle on the Renaissance Club's par five third hole. He followed it up with another birdie and ended the round with five consecutive pars.
