WATCH: Rose Zhang encounters disastrous bunker at 2024 AIG Women's Open

Rose Zhang's second round of the 2024 AIG Women's Open is currently in progress. After completing twelve holes, the LPGA Tour star is tied for 76th place, following an even-par 72 in the opening round.

Despite a strong opening round, Zhang finds herself in a precarious position on the leaderboard. The former Stanford alum began the day with a par, but her game faltered on the par-4 second hole. Unfortunately, she found herself in the greenside bunker on that hole.

St. Andrews is notorious for its deep pot bunkers. Zhang struggled to escape the bunker on her first attempt, as the ball struck the lip and rolled back down to her feet.

For her second try, she exchanged her club for a more lofted wedge. This attempt was equally unsuccessful, as the ball struck the bunker wall again. This time, however, the ball ricocheted off the wall, hit her thigh, and then bounced off her club to land in her footprints.

Determined to escape the bunker, the 21-year-old decided to play the shot backwards. Her third attempt finally freed her from the sand trap, leaving her to play her next shot from a considerable distance on the fairway.

The disaster led Zhang to card in a quadruple bogey 8 on the St. Andrews' par-4 second hole. She recovered on the next hole with a birdie, but then carded a double bogey on the par-5 fifth hole, leaving her at five over par. With the projected cut line at four over par, Zhang needs a couple of birdies on the final few holes to make it through the weekend.
