Tiger Woods won the fourth Major of his career at the 2000 PGA Championship after defeating Bob May in a playoff. The American golfer was impressive with his game at the Major. He was tied for the lead after four rounds at 18-under with May.
They headed for a playoff to determine the winner, where Woods made a birdie on the first playoff hole while May made a par. Woods ultimately won the event.
Following the Major, Tiger Woods reflected on his playoff performance, saying, via ESPN:
"It was an incredible battle. We never backed off. Birdie for birdie, shot for shot, that's as good as it gets."
It was Tiger Woods' second back-to-back win at the PGA Championship. He won the Major in 1999 as well. Following the Major, Woods reflected on his performance at the PGA Championship 2000. He said, via PGA Championship:
“Anytime you get to play against the best, and be able to come out on top against the best, it’s always going to be more satisfying. The last two years the PGA Championship has drawn the best field, and I’ve been very fortunate to be able to win. But to be able to tee it up and go toe-to-toe against the best players in the world, that’s what you dream about.”
Notably, 2000 was an incredible year for Tiger Woods. He won three Majors, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.
"Played a good solid round of golf"- When Bob May reflected on his performance after losing to Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship 2000
Bob May started with a round of 72 on the first day at the 2000 PGA Championship. However, after a rough time, he improved in the next three rounds. He played the next three rounds of 66 to settle in the tie with Tiger Woods at 18-under. However, he lost in the playoff.
Following the Major, May reflected on his performance and said, via PGA Championship:
“I wanted to concentrate real hard out there today and, you know, prove to people I can play out here. It’s not a question anymore. I went out and played a good solid round of golf, and was just one shot too short.”
May returned to play at the PGA Championship in 2001, but that year, he struggled with his game and settled in 73rd place. Having turned pro in 1991, he only won one professional tournament in his career, the Victor Chandler British Masters in 1999. Meanwhile, his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship 2000 was his best finish in the Majors.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods has won 15 Major titles in his career, including four PGA Championships. After winning the 2000 PGA Championship, he won the Major again in 2006 and 2007.
