The DP World Tour's Global Amateur Pathway, launched in collaboration with The R&A and the PGA Tour, is an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between amateur golf and professional golf for male non-collegiate golfers. Introduced in 2024, the program offers elite amateur golfers a route to playing professionally on the DP World Tour (formerly known as European Tour).

The top-20 players on the World Golf Amateur Rankings (WAGR) who are eligible at the end of the ranking period will earn a Tour card for the next season. The program complements existing initiatives like PGA Tour University, which provides similar opportunities for top ranked Division 1 collegiate golfers at the end of the NCAA Championship.

Together, both programs ensure that elite golfers across all amateur categories have the opportunity to access professional tours. Here's what Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour's commissioner, had to say about the program (via DP World Tour):

"The Global Amateur Pathway, working in tandem with PGA TOUR University, ensures emerging amateurs have easily understood and achievable routes available as they enter the world of professional golf. We are highly invested in providing our stars of tomorrow with a clear path to the top of the game, and these Pathways – Global Amateur Pathway, PGA TOUR University and PGA TOUR University Accelerated – play a critical role in identifying and developing elite amateurs on their journey.”

The Global Amateur Pathway extends beyond the DP World Tour. It offers exemptions on the following partner tours (via DP World Tour):

  • European Challenge Tour
  • Sunshine Tour
  • Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia
  • Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI)
  • PGA Tour Americas

Here are the eligibility criteria for the Global Amateur Pathway Ranking (via DP World Tour):

  • Not be a current NCAA Division I player
  • Be at least 20 years of age by the end of the calendar year of the relevant Ranking Period
  • Be within the top 200 WAGR
  • Players who are outside the top 200 WAGR by the end of the Registration Period who then move into the top 100 WAGR at any time prior to the conclusion of the Late Registration Period in the relevant season (September 20, 2025)

Registrations for the current Global Amateur Pathway Ranking Period are open from now until June 30 and will conclude on October 13. The rankings will be published each week on the official webpage.

Wenyi Ding tops 2024 Global Amateur Pathway Ranking

Wenyi Ding earned a card into the DP World Tour's 2025 season by topping the inaugural Global Amateur Pathway Ranking. The 19-year-old was ranked as the No. 3 amateur in the world on WAGR and soared up the European Tour's program following a victory at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship late in 2024.

The former Arizona State University golfer made his professional debut in 2024 at the Challenge Tour's Hangzhou Open in his home country of China. Here's what Ding had to say about the program aiding his way into playing professional golf (via PGA Tour):

"I’m excited to start my journey as a professional and look forward to teeing it up on the DP World Tour next season. The Global Amateur Pathway has given me an incredible opportunity, and my thanks go to the DP World Tour, The R&A and the PGA TOUR for supporting me and my fellow amateur players to reach their goals.”

The inaugural Global Amateur Pathway program was a massive success story. Ding has since played in five tournaments as a professional and even recorded a top-5 finish at the ISPS Handa Australian Open in November 2024.
