US golfer Scottie Scheffler made a thumping return to the world no. 1 spot after successfully defending his WM Phoenix Open title. The 2022 Masters champion took home a whopping $3 million cash prize.
The WM Phoenix Open was the biggest elevated event on the 2023 PGA Tour calendar. Scheffler marked his fifth worldwide victory at TPC Scottsdale after beating Canadian golfer Nick Taylor and Spanish golfer Jon Rahm.
Scheffler made four birdies and an eagle in his final round to clinch the victory that helped him dethrone former world no. 1 and competitor at the tournament, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
Apart from Nick Taylor, Jon Rahm, and Rory McIlroy, Scheffler faced a tough roster of players. Significant golfers such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Tom Kim, Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa amongst others.
