The achievement of winning three Major Championships in one year is known as the "Triple Crown" of golf. A golfer is deemed to have won the triple crown if they triumph in three of the four Major Championships- the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open, and The Open or British Open, in the same year.
Only two golfers have achieved this distinction in the annals of modern golf history. Those golfers are Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods.
Hogan became the first to achieve the title when he won the Masters, US Open, and The Open in 1953. Hogan was unable to complete the Grand Slam that year because the dates of The Open and the PGA Championship overlapped. However, winning the triple crown was a massive feat in itself.
Tiger Woods joined this coveted club in 2000, courtesy of his wins at the US Open, The Open, and the PGA Championship. Since then, no other golfer has managed to achieve this title or crown.
Additionally, Tiger Woods also won the PGA Tour's triple crown in the same year. This entails taking home the three oldest PGA Tour titles in one year. The Open Championship (1860), the US Open (1895), and the Canadian Open (1904) are the three oldest events, and winning these events in 2000 earned Woods this title. Another golfer who achieved this rare feat is Lee Trevino, in 1971.
Golfers who have a chance of earning a triple crown this year
The third major championship of the year, the 2024 US Open, will begin on June 13th at Pinehurst Golf Course No. 2. This time around, two golfers stand a chance of earning a triple crown.
The World No.1 Scottie Scheffler won the Masters and is in the form of his life with 5 wins and 2-runner-up finishes this year. He is coming into the tournament with an exceptional victory at Muirfield Golf Village, having emerged thriumphant in the Memorial Tournament.
The other golfer who is in contention to win a Triple Crown is Xander Schauffele. He won his first Major Championship this year, the 2024 PGA Championship, and has looked in decent touch since then. He has registered a win, 2 runner-up finishes, and 10 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2024.
The monetary benefits and FedExCup points that are up for grabs this week will be extra motivation for these golfers to give their best. The total purse value for the 2024 US Open is $20 million, with the winner taking home $3.9 million along with 750 FedExCup points. The champion will also receive a 10-year exemption to the US Open and a 5-year exemption to the other 3 major championships.
