Who is Canadian golfer Mike Weir? Know all about the 54-year-old

The 54-year-old, Canadian golfer, Mike Weir, was born on May 12, 1970, in Sarnia, Canada. The golfer completed his studies at Brigham Young University and started playing golf professionally in 1992. Currently, he plays from Brights, GRV of Canada, and lives in Sandy, Utah in the USA.

Mike Weir joined the PGA Tour in 1998 and has participated in 462 events to date. He has won 8 PGA tournaments along with 2 international wins. The golfer has officially earned $28,043,420 in his golf career.

Weir worked as a caddie at the Huron Oaks Golf Club when he was 11. He dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour when he was 14. After practicing for a long time, Weir won the 1986 Canadian Juvenile Golf Championship at the age of 16. During his amateur career in 1993, Weir won the Infiniti Tournament Players' Championship and the Canadian Professional Golf Tour Rookie of the Year.

Weir played his first PGA event in 1998 but his performance was not good enough to qualify automatically for the next season. He went back to Q-School in California and won the tournament, thereby qualifying for the 1999 PGA Tour. He won his first PGA event in 1999 at the Air Canada Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.

Mike Weir beat Tiger Woods in a singles match at the President's Cup at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2007. However, since 2010, Weir has not been able to make the cut at PGA events due to injuries to his wrist and elbow.


Mike Weir's name inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame

Weir's name was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. He was recognized as Canada's top athlete and won the Lou Marsh Trophy in 2003. He has also won the Lionel Conacher Award thrice.

When Weir was 11, he wrote to Jack Nicklaus asking if he should switch to playing golf with his right hand. As quoted by the Canadian encyclopedia, Nicklaus said:

“If you are a good player left-handed, don’t change anything especially if that feels natural to you.”

Weir listened to him and implemented it. He represented his school, St. Clair Secondary School in Sarnia, and won three times back-to-back at the Western Athletic Conference golf championships from 1990 to 1992.

In Mike Weir's amateur career, he earned the Ontario Men's Amateur Golf Championship title twice in three years. He participated in five President's Cup teams and also represented Canada six times at the World Cup. He was also the first Canadian man to win a Major on the PGA Tour at the Masters in 2003.
