Luke Clanton has been playing impressive golf since making his debut on the PGA Tour. The 20-year-old golfer put a setback at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship behind him and became the first amateur to register back-to-back top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1958.
Even at the ongoing Wyndham Championship 2024, Clanton has managed to impress despite troubles with the weather. While the credit behind his success goes to many people, one person who constantly accompanies Clanton in his game is his caddie, Jason Wiertel.
Luke Clanton teamed up with Wiertel in 2022 at Pinehurst. The duo met when Clanton was preparing for the North and South Men's Amateur Championship. Wiertel, who is a teacher and worked as a caddie during the summer, was at the Pinehurst practice tee along with his daughter Lucy.
Recalling the interaction, Wiertel said in an interview:
“She’s a little grinder,” Wiertel said. “Luke took one swing, and she walked over and said, ‘Hey, how far do you hit your pitching wedge?’ I asked if he had a caddie. He won the damn thing, and we just kind of stayed in touch.”
It would be safe to assume that staying in touch seems to be working for both men. After all, Clanton is achieving great results on the PGA Tour, and Wiertel being his caddie does deserve credit for it.
Luke Clanton's parents spoke about their son's success on the PGA Tour
So far, Luke Clanton has played in six events on the PGA Tour. While his best result came at the John Deere Classic where he tied for second place, Clanton's first top 10 finish came earlier when he finished T10 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
After a phenomenal performance at the tournament, Clanton's parents spoke about the success of their son. Clanton's father David, who was also his first coach, got emotional and said (via PGA Tour):
"It's been amazing, it's been humbling. I mean, we started this journey at four, maybe three and a half, four years old, and it was meant just for this, and we're here. It's any father's dream to see their child get here, especially if you're the one that taught your child and hoped that he did a good job.
Luke Clanton's mother Rhonda, who works as a flight attendant, was also emotional as she spoke about her son's success. She said:
"Coming here has been just fun, to have the opportunity for him, and for him to shine like this, because we know he's good, but now maybe the rest of the pro world might know he's good, you know because we know, we know he'll make it, we know. It's just he knows now, that's what's important for me."

Along with these results, another amazing thing for Luke Clanton is the fact that he is rubbing shoulders with some of the best professional golfers in the world. It will be interesting to see how Clanton can use this experience in future tournaments on the PGA Tour.
