Richard Bland won the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship on Sunday, May 26. This marks Bland's first triumph on the professional scene since tying the knot with his wife, Catrin Nystrom.
Nystrom, 42, is a former Swedish flight attendant. In fact, the two met in London in 2020, when Nystrom was stationed there as part of her job, while the player was on the European Tour.
Bland and Nystrom met through a dating app. They began dating, and their relationship went from strength to strength, although they quickly faced a major obstacle, the confinement experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the forced separation, Bland and Nystrom did not lose touch or sever their relationship. Instead, they moved in together prior to the confinement period ending, which strengthened their bond even more.
After the pandemic, both Richard Bland and Catrin Nystrom resumed their respective careers. Catrin later left her job and joined Bland's support staff. She even caddied for him on several occasions. They got married in July 2022. The couple broke the news by posting photos of the ceremony on social media.
A look at Richard Bland's performance at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship
The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship was Richard Bland's first event on the PGA Tour. Bland triumphed at Harbor Shores Resort in Michigan, finishing three strokes ahead of Richard Green with a score of 17 under.
The event was played over four rounds, with a cut after 36 holes. Bland was in contention for the title right from the outset, carding a first round of 64, with one eagle and five birdies, and no bogeys.
During the second round, Bland posted a score of 66, with six birdies and one bogey. However, his aspirations of winning the event were threatened during the so-called "Moving Day", as he could only manage a score of 73, with two birdies and five bogeys. Bland bounced back in style and carded his best round of the tournament (63) with an eagle, eight birdies and two bogeys to complete the 72 holes with a score of 17 under.
Bland had earlier qualified for the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship through a one-time sponsor exemption awarded only to players who have won a DP World Tour tournament in the last five years and are over the age of 50. The Englishman won the 2021 Betfred British Masters and turned 50 in February 2023. These two circumstances opened the doors to Harbor Shores Resort for him.
However, the PGA Tour Championship has already stated that this victory will not grant Bland his tour card as Bland is part of LIV Golf.
