Golf is one of the oldest sports in the world. However, in 2024, it will be only the fifth time the sport is included in the Olympics.
The first edition was held in 1900, followed by another in 1904. Golf then returned to the Olympics in 2016, with the most recent edition held in 2020. In these four editions, four different players have won gold medals, representing three different countries.
American golfers have been quite successful in Olympic golf. Chandler Egan won two medals in the Olympics: one individual medal and one in the team event. In 1904, golf was contested in two categories at the Olympics: men's individual and team events.
Egan won silver in the individual event and was part of the gold medal-winning team. Additionally, Burt McKinnie and Francis Newton also won two medals in the Olympics, one in the individual event and the other in the team event. In 1904, McKinnie and Newton settled for bronze medals in the individual category and were part of the USA team that won silver in the team event.
Xander Schauffele and Justin Rose have also been successful players in recent Olympic editions, both winning gold medals for their countries. When golf was first held in the Olympics in 1900, Charles Sands won the event. The American golfer secured a gold medal for his country, while Walter Rutherford won silver and David Robertson won bronze.
