American professional golfer Billy Horschel is having quite an eventful week at the Royal Troon. After three rounds at The Open Championship 2024, Horschel is leading the pack and is a massive favorite to win his first-ever Claret Jug. A terrific Round 2 and 3 in which he shot 68-69 helped Horschel stand in 1st place.
Aside from his stellar performance at the Royal Troon so far, Horschel has also made headlines for carrying a custom-made West Ham golf bag. The reason behind this is simple. Billy Horschel is a massive fan of West Ham Football Club.
In a recent interview with "TalkSport", Horschel revealed how he came to support the East London-based football club. During Horschel's sophomore year of college, he moved into a new apartment, and since the cable was not going to be on for a few days, the golfer decided to purchase some DVDs. One such DVD Horschel purchased was of the film Green Street, which revolves around the football teams of Millwall and West Ham.
That's when Billy Horschel began supporting them and has followed every update regarding West Ham United ever since. Horschel also claimed that he always tries to bring the West Ham United golf bag at The Open and it always goes well with the fans.
Billy Horschel once spoke about why he decided to play in the tough conditions Europe has to offer
The success Billy Horschel is having at The Open Championship should not come as a surprise to anyone. While Horschell has won a majority of his events on the PGA Tour, it's important to note that he has played a lot of golf in Europe and has also won events on the European Tour.
After Horschell found success in the ongoing Open Championship 2024, "Bunkered Golf" magazine writer, Ben Parsons, posted a tweet wherein he mentioned what Horschell once told him about playing in tough European conditions while other American golfers chose to stay at home.
Billy Horschel said:
"My coach Buddy Alexander said if you want to be considered a world-class player you have to go and play around the world, and you've got to play well. It's made me a better player going to places I haven't been before, adjusting to the conditions, temperatures, and all the different ways the courses are set up compared to America. At the same time, as a person, having to communicate and get along and understand people from other countries, it's a growth in itself."
While Horschel is a massive favorite to win his first-ever Claret Jug, he is closely being followed by the likes of Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele. It will be interesting to see who clinches this year's edition of the Open.
