The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place at the iconic Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, New York, next September. Amid the ongoing tensions in the golf world caused by the new LIV Golf League, fans are uncertain whether their favorite players from the Saudi-backed circuit will be eligible to compete in the prestigious event.
One such player whose participation is uncertain is Jon Rahm. Having switched from the PGA Tour to the LIV Golf League in late 2023, the 29-year-old is obligated to participate in at least four events on the DP World Tour to maintain his membership and eligibility for the Ryder Cup.
Team Europe captain Luke Donald has stated that he had a conversation with Rahm about his eligibility for the Ryder Cup. Donald mentioned that Rahm is committed to the cause and will strive to do everything possible to ensure his eligibility. Here's what Donald said (via Golf Magic):
"I've had many conversations with Jon. He absolutely knows what the deal is. He knew when he signed for LIV what the policies were on the DP World Tour. You have to play your four [tournaments]. Per all the policies, he can pay fines or he can appeal like some of the guys have, and that gives him the opportunity to do that. It's really up to him to do that and become eligible [for the Ryder Cup]. He certainly mentioned at the PGA Championship he was willing to do whatever it takes to commit to me and the team. I hope it happens."
Rahm's best shot for qualifying for the Ryder Cup is to participate in the upcoming Spanish Open. However, with entries closing in a week, the LIV Golf star is yet to register for the event. If he does not play, his chances of making the team are slim.
