The Women's Scottish Open originally began in 1986 on the Ladies European Tour, under the name Bowring Ladies Scottish Open. It is a 72-hole stroke play event, that was changed to 54 holes for nine years, between 2007 and 2016, after which it returned to its 72-hole format. Another major change was that the Women's Scottish Open became co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour in 2017, 31 years after its inception.
In July 2024, the LPGA announced that ISPS Handa would be the new sponsor of the event, which had previously been supported by FreeD Group. The event has had multiple sponsors over the years, including "Aberdeen," which was also the sponsor of the men's Scottish Open, which is now known as the Genesis Scottish Open.
