Tiger Woods is competing for the 16th major title of his illustrious career at The 2024 Open Championship this week. Fans worldwide have their eyes set on the PGA Tour star, as the event marks Woods' first time competing in all four of golf's major tournaments since 2019.
The Stanford alum was taken out of the game for nearly three years following a near fatal car crash in 2021. Woods went on to have subtalar fusion surgery on his right leg that year and has since been involved in a long and difficult rehab and recovery program.
During the first round of The 2024 Open Championship, Tiger Woods was spotted walking uncomfortably. With the Royal Troon Golf Club's slopey fairways, the walk today posed as a challenge for the three-time Open Championship winner. During the featured groups broadcast, an announcer said:
"You look at the eyes, you gotta think there's a lot of painkillers being taken to cope with the pain. It's not easy."
Tiger Woods made his comeback to golf in 2022. However, he has had a tough time since then. Last year, Woods withdrew from the Masters and did not play at any of the other majors.
The 2024 season has been working well in Woods' favour. Despite missing the cut at two majors this year, he has been coping well with his injuries and has been able to stay competitive.
Tiger Woods' round one at The 2024 Open Championship
Tiger Woods sits tied for 92nd place with a score of four over par through nine holes for the day. He had a decent start to the day with two pars and one birdie in the first three holes.
However, he ran into trouble on the par five fourth hole at Royal Troon and picked up a bogey. Woods went on to card in a double bogey on the fifth hole to fall further down the leaderboard.
The second round of the tournament will be crucial for Woods as it will determine whether or not he makes the cut to play at the weekend. He will tee it up tomorrow at 9:25 AM local time with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
