Zurich Classic of New Orleans Format

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, is currently held at TPC Louisiana, a golf course in Avondale, a suburb southwest of New Orleans. It was carried out 86 years ago in 1938, and since 1958, it has been held annually. Usually, it takes place in the early or middle of April. The Fore! Kids Foundation organised the event, with Zurich Insurance Group serving as the primary sponsor.

The 2023 edition of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was won by two American professional golfers, Nick Hardy and Davis Riley.

What is the format for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans?

The Zurich Classic was changed to an eighty-partner team competition in 2017. Each team's opening player is selected based on the Tour priority rankings, and that player's partner must be a member of the PGA Tour or qualify for entrance through sponsor exemption. In the first and third rounds of the stroke play format, players alternated strokes (foursome) and played better ball (fourball) in the second and fourth rounds.

The cut line consists of 33 teams plus ties. In addition to 400 FedEx Cup points and a two-year exemption, the winners do not receive invites to the Masters or world ranking points for the event. In 2018, the format was changed to feature alternate shots for the second and fourth rounds and four balls for the first and third.

How does the Zurich Classic of New Orleans work?

A field of 160 players, provided their partner holds a tour card or sponsor exemption, will be divided into 80 pairs, as decided by the players upon their entry into the tournament.

Following each round, the format switches between fourballs and foursomes, with the former coming first and the latter last. Only the top 33 partnerships after 36 holes advance, and the champions get two-year exemptions in addition to invitations to exclusive events like the PGA Championship.
