Known as the NTT IndyCar Series, the IndyCar Series is the top American open-wheel car racing class in the US. To rival CART, Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the time, founded the IndyCar, LLC, the series' parent organization, and it began as the Indy Racing League in 1996. Both IndyCar Series and CART's successor, Champ Car World Series combined, and their histories and statistics were also combined.
Honda and Chevrolet serve as the manufacturers of the chosen teams and supply them with various engines. While each team employs the same chassis created by an Italian manufacturer Dallara, the IndyCar Series enables manufacturers to develop a variety of engine types. IndyCar declared on December 16, 2024, that it would start testing a brand-new Dallara IR-27 chassis, which is anticipated to debut in the 2027 season.
