Known as the NTT IndyCar Series, the IndyCar Series is the top American open-wheel car racing class in the US. Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the time, founded the IndyCar, LLC, the series' parent organization, as a rival to CART, and it began as the Indy Racing League in 1996. Both series combined, and their histories and statistics were also combined. The Indianapolis 500 is the primary event and the first race of the IndyCar series.
While each team employs the same chassis created by an Italian manufacturer Dallara, the IndyCar Series enables manufacturers to develop a variety of engine types. IndyCar declared on December 16, 2024, that it would start testing a brand-new Dallara IR-27 chassis, which is anticipated to debut in the 2027 season. The aerodynamics of Formula One cars from 2022 and 2026 will serve as the basis and inspiration for the IR-27's design. 18-inch wheel rims, which are utilized in the NASCAR Cup Series and Formula One, will also be incorporated into the updated chassis. However, the chassis will have aggressive aerodynamics to further improve overtaking and will not have an airbox for any track type.
