That brings us to the conclusion of our coverage of Match 49 of IPL 2024. Punjab Kings would be delighted at notching up a 5th consecutive win over the mighty Chennai Super Kings. They pick up important 2 points that takes their tally to a total of 8 on the points table. There are 3 teams immediately above them on 10 points each. One of them has played an extra match too. Hence, it is a big boost. For Chennai, there are problems galore. The word is that Mustafizur Rahman is set to leave for international duty. Pathirana and Deshpande did not play today due to non-fitness and Deepak Chahar hobbled away after bowling two balls. What's more is that they face the same opposition on Sunday. Though, we know that if there is one team that knows how to bounce back, it is the Chennai Super Kings. Hence, Sunday would be an interesting watch.
Harpreet Brar (Player of the Match, 2/16 off 4 overs): Obviously, it was a good wicket to bowl on. Even Rahul bowled very well. It was a good wicket for spinners. I have been playing for 6 years around legends like MS and others. I was confident. I don't think of wickets. I aim to bowl a lot of dot balls and dot balls give me wickets. When there is something on the wicket, it helps and the bowler's confidence goes up.
Sam Curran (Punjab Kings captain): Very happy, anytime you come to Chennai, you want to take the two points, it's a special feeling, huge confidence booster for the boys. We lost all our home game, won all our away games, similar trend this time and any team that can pick the momentum at the backend of the tournament is dangerous, we have to win all the games and we're taking one game at a time and we're coming up against the same opposition in a few days time. It's pretty obvious when you come to Chennai, really hot, extreme conditions, lot of sweat, wet ball and winning the toss was huge. We tried something different, gave the new ball to Rabada and that set the tone for us, that sent the strong message to the bowling group, eased nicely in the powerplay, we thought nothing to lose today and KG did well at the start. Incredible, Chahar come back into the game in Kolkata, him and Brar were amazing, tried bowling something different to bowl him at the 19th over and to bowl such a legend like MS, shows the confidence he has. Well I think, tried something different with the spinners in the middle, pace bowlers going for plenty and tried something different and took them gamble to bowl in the end and picked up the wicket of Mo. That's the great thing, we start 1-0 up against them, but different conditions and take confidence from this, enjoy the wins and how we constructed the run chase, helps confidence. Spinners bowled well, KG bowled well and we take the two points and move on.
Jonny Bairstow gets the award for hitting maximum fours in the match.
Ruturaj Gaikwad also gets the maximum sixes award.

Rilee Rossouw (Punjab Kings): I think we got to give credit to the bowlers, they kept them under 160, very chaseable and, Jonny played really well and gave us a good foundation to help chase it down easily in the end. Something that we got in our team, spin twins, we keep calling them, there's another one sitting in the dug out who wants to come into the team, unfortunately can't have all of them together. Pretty simple, just see the ball and hit the ball, nothing really spoken about and kept it simple. Full toss, wouldn't you be? it's unfortunate, one of those things, so focused and missed out today on that. It's never over until it's over, we can still make the playoffs, got the belief in changing room and focus on our games and results go our way hopefully.
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings captain): Probably I would 50 or 60 runs short, the pitch wasn't great batting first and it got better in the second half and with the impact player rule, it's definitely 50 or 60 runs short. I practice a lot, the difference is I win in the practice but not in the actual toss, but have to try something different. I'm under pressure in the toss, not in the actual game. Very difficult, even last game when we won, we didn't expect we would win by that much margin, you cannot hope for things to happen. The only thing we can do is, bat better provided the conditions, the pitch was better when we played last game. But, this game, the pitch was not that great to bat on. It's a real problem, yes, there are phases, you want to get wicket and suddenly you see you have two bowlers with dew on, with four more games, hope we can turn it around.
Punjab Kings win by 7 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings 162/7 (20 overs) Punjab Kings 163/3 (17.5 overs)
In the end, it is a clinical victory for the Punjab Kings. With this they make it 5 consecutive wins against the mighty Chennai Super Kings.
It is a win that has been set up by their spinners. Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar bowled 8 overs in tandem and conceded only 33 runs with no fours or sixes. Also, they picked up 4 wickets in between themselves.
Chennai would have known that they had an under par score. Particularly, with the dew expected to come in. It became so wet out there that we had to change the ball twice in the 17 overs and a bit that was sent down in the second innings.
What made matters worse for CSK was the fact that Deepak Chahar hobbled off after bowling only two balls. They were already missing Tushar Deshpande and Matheesha Pathirana today. Also, they had already used the impact substitution to bring in Rizvi, which rendered them in an even worse position.
Punjab chased it with 13 balls to spare. Though, there is an argument that they should have achieved the target earlier with the kind of start Bairstow and Russouw gave them. However, most of their supporters won't be claiming. They take 2 points out of this match and move to 8 points on the table.
17.5 Richard Gleeson to Shashank Singh, THAT IS IT! Punjab Kings keep the record intact, win fifth time in a row against CSK, it's another comprehensive win. Short delivery into the batter, Shashank tucked it past the square-leg region, they finish the single and looking to take the second, but overthrows meant they seal the game with two.
17.4 Richard Gleeson to Sam Curran, full again, on the leg-stump again. Curran misses the whip, thuds on the pad and gets a leg-bye this time.
3 runs to win. Sam is looking to finish it off with some flair.
17.3 Richard Gleeson to Sam Curran, LOUD APPEAL FOR LBW, UP GOES THE FINGER! Curran reviews it instantly. Length delivery on the leg-stump, Curran walks across off-stump to swipe but misses, thuds on the pad.
UltraEdge comes up to confirm there was no bat involved. Ball tracking confirms it pitched well outside the leg-stump line and on-field umpire overturns his decision as Curran stays!
Poor from Shivam Dube in the deep. He has been made to look stupid. The ball bounced in front of him and spun the other way. He overran it too.
