That's all from this game - it was a high octane encounter which has ensured that no team remains unbeaten at the Lanka Premier League 2024 - this is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my co-commentator Lavil Saldanha!
Charith Asalanka, Jaffna Kings captain : I am very pleased to see this performance. Credit to the bowlers. Keeping them under 190 in these conditions were great. We wanted to keep them under 200 and it was very good to see us do well with our bowling and fielding unit. I enjoy my bowling very much and you will see me bowl a lot more as this tournament progresses.
Niroshan Dickwella, Galle Marvels captain : Of course, I think we were 10 runs short. In the PP, they bowled well and they won that chase of the game. Ball was moving a lot, we wanted to keep wickets in hand and then go hard at the end but their bowlers were great and put us under pressure. All 3 games we played very well, even today I think we were put a good account of ourselves but some things did not go our way, we are looking forward to the next game.
Azmatullah Omarzai is the player of the match. Here's what he has to say: When I went to bat out in the middle, I had to go out from the first ball so I went and I did exactly that. We weren't under pressure, we knew they were a bowler short and could get the job done in the last over. The pitch was good for batting, initially it was great for seam bowling as well
Jaffna Kings (191 for 5) defeat Galle Marvels (187 for 5) by 5 wickets!
THIS WIN TAKES JAFFNA KINGS TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE - PARTNERSHIP OF 49 FROM 21 BALLS BETWEEN OMARZAI AND ASALANKA HAVE MADE THIS A WIN TO SAVOUR!
Pathum Nissanka, who had scored 51 from 33 balls against the same opposition just a few days ago was the first to depart in this chase when Zahoor Khan continued his good work and Alex Hales pouched a skier. Kusal Mendis did not hold back with his shot making in the early parts of the chase but Isuru Udana had the last laugh against his countryman.
Rilee Rossouw came into this match with a bit of a barren run behind him. He began briskly on a surface which was conducive for batting and even though Avishka Fernando was dismissed for 14, the Protea was joined by another journeyman in Alex Ross, who has made his name as a very reliable middle order batter through his consistent efforts in the Big Bash over the years. He was at the non-striker's end when Rossouw brought up his first Lanka Premier league 50.
Post that, it was one punch after the other coming from both sides alternatively. If it was the loss of Ross and Rossouw's wickets, Omarzai and Asalanka took Isuru Udana for 16 runs in the 18th over which really added to the drama as we approached the business stages of this game.
Dwaine Pretorius set his fielding for the penultimate over for slower ones and it went pretty well for Galle till the time they put pace to the ball which saw Asalanka dispatch his first six of the evening at a time when his side needed it the most. He almost got out the next ball but it was a really tough chance to hold on to, in a night where even the wind had caught speed suddenly. Omarzai deserves a lot of credit for the way he ended up the match and ensuring 2 points for his side that will put them at the top of the table!
