After two wins on the bounce, India seemed primed to wrap up the series despite England coming out firing with the bat in Rajkot. The phenomenon named Varun Chakravarthy happened again and England, in what was a reckless display of batting, blew away a strong position to hand the initiative to the hosts.
However, the lower order wagged to take the visitors to a competitive 171 - a total that eventually proved 26 runs too many for India as their own batting lineup came up a cropper against England's relentless bowling unit. And so, there's a new layer of fascination added to the series just like that as the party now moves to Pune.
India continue to have most bases covered with nothing so far suggesting that England are handling their trial by spin a whole lot better. The deck at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium could have a bit in it for the spinners too even as a decent score is often on the cards and if that is the case, expect India's tweakers to call the shots again.
Having said that, there are worries on the batting front for India. Sanju Samson has been perpetually bounced out by Jofra Archer while skipper Suryakumar Yadav is enduring a rare wretched run of form in the shortest format. Hardik Pandya, despite top-scoring in the last game, looked far from fluent and the hosts' obsession to have a left-right pair intact has sent their batting order into a bit of a tailspin too with Axar Patel's ability not being utilized to the best effect.
That said, there is some positive news that has come through with Rinku Singh declared fit for this contest. He should walk back in and give the hosts another left-handed option as well as a composed head who can tackle the pacers at the death. Dhruv Jurel may have to vacate his spot and if Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma can continue to produce some of their brilliance from earlier in the series, India will feel a lot better.
India have gone spin heavy so far but with Washington Sundar's services barely required, they might want to consider ringing in a change with either Shivam Dube or Ramandeep Singh coming in to add more muscle besides a couple of extra overs of pace. Of course, Ravi Bishnoi had a forgettable outing in the last game but having bowled economically well in the first two games, he should be given the backing.
Of course, the other catch is Arshdeep Singh, who was rested for the last game. Who does he replace remains to be seen but it's almost a given that he ought to slot back in. Mohammed Shami made his much-awaited comeback in Rajkot and while he did swing the new ball, he wasn't at his quickest and seemed to amble in to the crease. Whether he features again or not is something that remains to be seen.
England's bowlers have been outstanding so far with Brydon Carse proving to be a revelation. Archer and Wood have cranked up the speedometers and in Jamie Overton, they have a capable middle-overs operator who has his variations to work with as well. And then there's Adil Rashid - a lot different to Chakravarthy but still incredibly effective with his loopy wrist-spin bowling keeping the Indian batters in check.
On the batting front, England need Philip Salt to find some form and quickly at that. While skipper Jos Buttler has been in scintillating touch and Liam Livingstone made his presence felt with a rapid 43 in the last game, it was Ben Duckett's breezy half-century that set things up for the visitors. Jamie Smith was made to keep wickets owing to a stiff calf so that he would avoid having to do a lot of running. But with the issue flaring up and him having to go off the field, there's a chance Jacob Bethell could come back into the XI.
This game, hence, is quite tantalizingly poised. England have gotten better with the ball as the series has gone along and have shown signs of improvement with the bat too while taking the positive approach. But they ought to tread with the line of aggression rather carefully for they have endured far too many middle-order collapses.
India are favorites to bounce back. But there's enough now to suggest that England are in a better place to level the series and go to Mumbai with everything to play for on Sunday!
England Probable XI: Philip Salt (wk), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
