So India finishes at the top of the points table and will square off against Australia in Dubai on March 4 (Tuesday). South Africa will now travel back to Lahore for their semi-final clash against New Zealand a day later. What an incredible effort it was from India in the group stages but now they face a dangerous Australian side who are still a team to reckon with despite having a second string side. A fascinating contest is on our hands. Like always, it was a pleasure bringing all the live coverage from this encounter. Till the next time, this is myself (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) signing off also on behalf of my fellow commentator and good mate Lavil Saldanha.
Rohit Sharma (India captain): It was important for us to finish the game on a high. New Zealand were playing really well and it was important to get the result. The Shreyas Axar partnership was crucial. The total which we got was enough to work it out. We had the confidence, the bowlers stepped up and did the job. Look Varun has got something different so we wanted to try and see what he can offer. We have to think what we want to do in the next game. If he gets it right it's very difficult to read him. No absolutely, it's very critical when you are playing such a short tournament. You want to win possibly every games. You have to correct the mistakes quickly. Australia is gonna be a good game. They have a rich history of playing ICC tournaments well. It will start from ball one. We need to think what we need to do on that particular day.
Mitchell Santner (New Zealand captain): Yeah obviously it was a slow wicket than what we came against. India controlled the middle phase with the bat. Shreyas batted brilliantly and then Shreyas did the job. Then they squeezed us with the spinners. Four quality spinners makes it really tough. Yeah I think the key for us was to get wickets in the powerplay and we got that. We go to Lahore where it should be a flat wicket. South Africa are a quality side. Would be interesting to see whether it will be an used pitch of not.
Varun Chakravarthy (Player of the Match, India): First of all, I felt nervous in the initial stages as I haven't played many ODI games for India. But as the game went on it eased a bit. I kept speaking to Virat, Rohit, and Shreyas and they all told me to calm down. Found out last night that I was going to play the game. I always wanted to represent the country but was a bit nervous. It wasn't a rank turner, but if you bowled in the right places it paid off. It was a total team effort, the way Kuldeep, Axar, and Jaddu bowled showed that.
India won by 44 runs
Shreyas Iyer 79(98) | Varun Chakravarthy 5/42(10) Kane Williamson 81(120) | Matt Henry 5/42(8)
Riding on a sensational spell of spin bowling by Varun Chakravarthy, India registered their third win of the ICC Champions Trophy and have set up a semi-final clash with Australia. The target of 250 was always going to be a tricky one for New Zealand and the spinners ruled the roost to skittle out New Zealand dod just 205 runs.
The opening duo of Will Young and Rachin Ravindra started well with a couple of boundaries but Ravindra ended up slicing a short of a length delivery straight to deep third man where Axar Patel took a brilliant catch. The introduction of the spinners tightened the screws on the New Zealand middle order. Will Young was the first scalp of Varun Chakravarthy and that started the slump of New Zealand.
Daryl Mitchell was put under pressure right from the word go by Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav. He didn't really make a good account of himself but managed to stitch a crucial stand with Kane Williamson. It was Kuldeep Yadav who provided the breakthrough in the 26th over which again opened the game in India’s favour. Tom Latham looked proactive out in the middle before an attempted reverse sweep led to his departure.
Glenn Phillips couldn't quite make a significant contribution either as Varun Chakravarthy trapped in front of the stumps. The squeeze continued as Chakravarthy trapped Michael Bracewell in front of the stumps. Williamson was the last resort for New Zealand. He batted really well but didn't really get enough support. His departure of the bowling of Axar Patel put the final nail in the coffin. However, Mitchell Santner kept New Zealand in the hunt with some lusty blows but it was a bridge too far in the end. Varun Chakravarthy ended with a five wicket haul as New Zealand were bowled out for 205.
That's it and India will play their semi final against Australia in a day's time. Will O'Rourke playing all that wrong un and sees his stumps getting shattered. Another convincing victory for India in ODIs as they continue their domination in the ICC Champions Trophy. The spinners ruled the roost and in the end, the target of 250 was a bit too much for New Zealand against these quality spinners.
45.3 Kuldeep Yadav to William O'Rourke, BOWLED! KULDEEP YADAV DELIVERS THE KILLER BLOW! INDIA WIN! Full and on the leg stump, O'Rourke plays it along the wrong line and the ball turns away, taking the off stump. India beat New Zealand by 44 runs and top Group A with this win. They will take on Australia in the first semi-final to take place on March 4.
William O’Rourke b Kuldeep Yadav 1 (2b, 0x4, 0x6)
45.2 Kuldeep Yadav to Kyle Jamieson, length delivery outside the off stump. Played it towards covers and picks up a single
45.1 Kuldeep Yadav to Kyle Jamieson, SIX! Full and on the line of the off stump, Jamieson opens his front foot and dispatches it over the fence for a maximum
That's the end of the 45th over and it's just a matter of formality for India from this stage. Just one more wicket left to seal the game and what an effort it has been from Varun Chakravarthy.

Varun Chakravarthy you beauty. First fifer in his ODI career and what a time to do that. In all likelihood, he should be included in the semi final line up.
44.4 Varun Chakravarthy to Matt Henry, CAUGHT! MAIDEN FIVE-WICKET HAUL IN ODI CRICKET FOR VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY! He buries the ghosts of the 2021 T20 World Cup and marks his resurgence in some style. Goes full and on the off stump, Henry looks to take him on and hits that one up in the air. Virat Kohli gets under that one nicely and takes a fine catch to end his stay in the middle. A maiden five-wicket haul for Varun Chakravarthy in ODIs, playing his first match of the Champions Trophy.
Matt Henry c Virat Kohli b Varun Chakravarthy 2 (4b, 0x4, 0x6)
44.3 Varun Chakravarthy to Kyle Jamieson, length delivery on the line of the middle and leg stump.Jamieson knocks it towards midwicket and picks up a single
Kyle Jamieson, RHB is the new man in.
That should be the game for India with the last recognised batter back in the hut. What a day Varun Chakravarthy is having. He has been just too good for the New Zealand batters.
44.2 Varun Chakravarthy to Mitchell Santner, BOWLED! WHAT A DELIVERY FROM CHAKRAVARTHY! He could do no wrong with the ball today. Goes seam up and on the off stump, Santner fails to read through the variation and misses that one, with the ball taking the off stump with the Kiwi skipper donning a perplexed look.
Mitchell Santner b Varun Chakravarthy 28 (31b, 1x4. 2x6)
