Commentary

We now come to the end of our coverage of the Women's Premier League for today. The UP Warriorz will be back on the field on Monday, taking on 'hosts' Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Gujarat Giants will be up against the Delhi Capitals a day before that. We'll be back tomorrow with more WPL action as the Royal Challengers Bangalore take on the Mumbai Indians. Two wins in two for the Warriorz. It's taken them a while, but they're taking formidable steps in their campaign - for starters, they've climbed over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the points table! They are beginning to click as a unit altogether, and their preference of using spin more often has been reaping rewards. The Gujarat Giants, on the other hand, are faced with problems upon problems. They simply lack the firepower up top in their batting line-up - there's no one to help them tee off in the powerplay, and adding to that, they might just be deprived of Harleen Deol's services going ahead - the knee injury she suffered didn't look good. Their fielding has been a massive let-down as well. Having not been able to clinch their first points after three games, the Giants must get their act together as soon as possible to stay in the hunt for the knockouts.

Grace Harris is the Player Of The Match - and has been handed the Orange Cap! Here's what she has to say: One ball at a time (On her approach with the bat). I try not to get flustered or frustrated, as I've got older I've learned to control my emotions, just go back to the basics and hit the ball when nervous. (On her remaining not out at the end of successful run-chases) It's a rarity, but I'm really enjoying with the UP Warriorz, embracing my role in the middle order. I'm really enjoying it, love India. I've probably bowled a few too many slot balls, but I've enjoyed the outswingers coming out a bit. It's a bit of progress, I'm ready to bowl at any opportunity given and try and make the most of it. Hope to do better with the ball. Deepti and I have come together a few times, I guess the left-hand right-hand combination helps, can put bowlers off their lines. Deepti sticks to her strengths, and that helps the partnership. Keep going this way, and we can win a few more games.

Alyssa Healy, UP Warriorz captain: She (Grace Harris) makes cricket look really easy at the moment. Full credit to her, she batted outstandingly tonight. We probably gave them a few too many at the end, having said that, 143 was definitely something that we were comfortable chasing. 19 overs of spin tonight did the trick for us. Our middle order's doing the job at the moment - for me and Kiran to go out there and take it on in the powerplay was apt - I thought she did brilliant the other night. It's a well-balanced side, have some amazing options on the bench raring to go as well. We've got RCB on Monday night, looking forward for an opportunity against the home side here. We should have probably won that first game, will have another crack at them.

Chamari Athapaththu: Finally I got the opportunity to play in UP Warriorz. The girls and support staff helped me immensely. It was a good wicket to bat. I executed my plans as a bowler and managed to bowl a lot of dot deliveries in the powerplay. Yeah if felt good but unfortunately I couldn't continue the knock. But I am really happy with Harris and my team performance. She is an amazing cricketer and she told me to play my natural. She knows how to play the game and I will try to support her as much as I can.

Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants captain): Yeah absolutely. Phoebe and Ash had a very good partnership and got us to an okay total. A few positives certainly. She was great. Timing it beautifully at the start of her innings. Nice to get her back in the line-up. Yeah, I think, we have seen the other teams when they have set batters and they can score 10 11 RPO at that stage which we are trying to build. I think, you know we played a different XI tonight. We have to stick to the team and see how they operate. We have got great options.

They never really let their foot off the pedal, did the Warriorz, and it paid off. A target of 143 wasn't quite going to prove to be a threat, particularly with the kind of start that they had. The Giants looked to claw their way back in the contest with a wicket or two against the run of play at times, but none of their bowlers - pace or spin - could restrict the flow of runs. Meghna Singh did bowl a maiden over to go along with the wicket of Sehrawat, but the presence of a well-set Grace Harris came to the Warriorz's aid after that.

Openers Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire played an integral role providing the Warriorz with the flying start that they had. Healy had more of the strike - she looked to attack upon the first opportunity, and had a reprieve or two while at it. Navgire looked to implement the same approach - she struck a couple of boundaries, but in trying to go after Kanwar, Navgire picked out Dayalan Hemalatha at backward point.

The duo of Grace Harris and Chamari Athapaththu came together once Healy was dismissed. While Athapaththu got going rather quickly, she barely had to do much the next couple of overs as Harris dug into the Giants bowlers. The spin-bowling all-rounder was severe on anything short or wide, and kept at it even after Athapaththu and Sehrawat departed in quick succession.

Deepti Sharma gladly played second fiddle to Harris, knocking it around and finding the odd-boundary every now and then. Harris had a half-century of her own after she clubbed Meghna Singh for a couple of boundaries in her last over, and the game was done the following over. Presentations coming up shortly.
