Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born on February 24, 1977, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is often regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Having come from a boxing family with his father and uncle, he was exposed to the sport early on in life. He did well in his amateur career, winning the national Golden Gloves titles in 1993, 1994, and 1996. This was followed by a bronze medal in the featherweight division at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Mayweather turned professional later that year and made a knockout victory in his debut on 11 October 1996 over Roberto Apodaca. He rapidly rose in the ranks as a professional, and by 1998, he had already captured his first world title - the WBC Super Featherweight Championship, against Genaro Hernandez.

For the next 10 years, Mayweather ruled the sport in multiple divisions including lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight, and light middleweight. He was especially known for his particular defensive skills and ring IQ. In 2017, Mayweather retired with a perfect record of 50-0, of which 27 were won by knockout after he defeated the UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017.
