In professional boxing, the light flyweight weight limit is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). The New York Walker Law in 1920 established a "junior flyweight" division with a 99-pound weight limit.

It is also referred to as junior flyweight or super strawweight. This division was soon eliminated, as no champions were crowned during the time.

Yoko Gushiken, Jung-Koo Chang, Michael Carbajal, Humberto Gonzalez, and Myung Woo Yuh are a few notable light flyweight champions throughout history.

History of the Light Flyweight Class in Pro Boxing

This weight class was recognized by the National Boxing Association (NBA) when it was established in 1921. The NBA, however, decided to stop recognizing the junior flyweight division on January 19, 1922.

The junior flyweight division was also eliminated by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) on December 31, 1929. Before its elimination, the division had never produced a champion. In the 1970s, the World Boxing Council (WBC) chose to bring this division back.

Franco Udella, who captured the WBC crown in 1975, became the first victor in this division. In 1975, Jaime Rios won a fifteen-round decision over Rigoberto Marcano to become the first champion of the World Boxing Association. Dodie Boy Peñalosa, who won the title in 1983, was the inaugural IBF champion.

On March 13, 1993, IBF champion Michael Carbajal defeated WBC champion Humberto González to unify the title in the first light flyweight "superfight." A light flyweight fighter (Carbajal) earned a million-dollar payday for the first time during their rematch on February 19, 1994.
